Layered Material Chairs

The Kartela Chair is Designed to Resemble a Material Swatch Book

The Kartela Chair is a conceptual seating design by Fatih Demirci that translates the format of a material swatch book into a three-dimensional furniture object. The chair is composed of stacked, horizontally layered panels that fan outward to form the seat and backrest. Each layer functions like a “page,” creating a stepped profile that defines both structure and surface through repetition. The overlapping elements collectively distribute weight while shaping a continuous sitting surface.

Different materials and finishes are applied across the layers to emphasize variation in texture, thickness, and color. This construction allows individual panels to remain visually distinct while contributing to the overall form. The chair’s geometry relies on the cumulative effect of the stacked layers rather than a concealed internal frame. Edges are left visibly articulated to reinforce the reference to sample materials arranged in sequence.
