In Japan, 'Jizo' is someone who takes away suffering from those who are in hell. He is friends with everyone, answers to the prayers of others and makes for a great children's toy.
Often this little fella is found near intersections, supposedly helping people find their way. At first, I thought these little Jizos were scary but once I got a closer look at their faces, they didn't seem so bad. The faces of the Jizo Statues of Chausudake Volcano look friendly and kind.
