This year marks the 120th anniversary of the Dogo Onsen Japanese spa and to celebrate, its hotel rooms have been totally transformed into artful accommodations by artists. The event will run from April until the year’s end in December, which gives people plenty of opportunity to stay at one of these unique rooms.
For his room, artist and designer Fujio Ishimoto used his work for Marimekko as the source of inspiration for his fusion room that blends Japanese and Western styles. Another one of the hotel rooms is completely covered in dots, which is a distinctive part of Yayoi Kusama’s style. The room is also brightly colored with a scheme of yellow and black. Some of the other artists who participated in reinterpreting the rooms of the Dogo Onsen hotel in their own style include Shuntaro Tanikawa, Akira Minagawa, and Araki Nobuyoshi.
