The Tokyo-based dating service Def Anniversary recently launched a new event that aims to use surgical masks as a dating tool. With many people in the city already donning the masks as a way to protect against cold and flu season, the event puts a clever twist on a common practice.
Traditionally, Def dating events involve bringing together a number of singles for massive speed dating sessions. However, at this new event, participants are asked to wear surgical masks that obscure half of their face. The idea is that since participants can not really tell what the person sitting across from them looks like, they will be forced to focus on personality instead. The effect of having a mask on can also help shy participants feel more comfortable and relaxed knowing that there is less pressure on appearances.
While the idea of using surgical masks as a dating tool may sound unusual, early feedback from participants demonstrates that the concept may be the next best thing to a blind date.
