MeliBio is introducing the future of honey with its bee-free honey, which is made in a lab rather than in a hive by honeybees. Recognizing that current honey production is putting thousands of bee species at risk through commercial beekeeping, loss of habitat, pesticide use and climate change, MeliBio is offering an alternative way for people to enjoy real honey. As CEO Darko Mandich says, "We decided to look into science to produce honey just like honeybees make it, but removing them from the supply chain so we can help wild bees to thrive."
Thanks to synthetic biology, the company is capable of reproducing the different compounds found in honey, which helps to create the unique flavors of different varieties.
