Dementia-Friendly Apps

This App for Dementia Teaches How to Create a Safe Home Environment

Academics at the University of Wollongong in Australia created a list of 10 Dementia Enabling Environment Principles that inspired the creation of an app for dementia.

The Dementia-Friendly Home app takes note of the design principles from the list in order to help partners and caregivers make the most of a physical space in order to improve a patient's well-being. Some of these principles include allowing people to see and be seen and creating familiar spaces.

The app reminds of these principles and uses a virtual home design in order to help others see these guides at work in a simulated environment. Through this app for dementia, carers will be able to see that white built-ins or fixtures against a white wall creates a challenging environment for people suffering from dementia, whereas differently colored objects create much more ease.
