The Living is a New York-based innovation studio that designed the Alive architecture prototype. The studio puts biology, computation, and sustainability at the core of its work. Moreover, The Living studio designed a mycelium structure for NASA to experiment with housing on Mars.
Alive is the studio's latest innovation of microbial communities. The structure is made from a calibration of grain, light, and airflow. It pushes the boundaries of probiotic buildings and multi-species architecture. Currently, the architectural prototype is on view at the Venice Architecture Biennale to demonstrate how organic materials and microbial communities can create functional architectural structures. In addition, this type of construction makes eco-friendly alternatives to our current wasteful and carbon-dense construction methods.
