The Coral Introduces a Solution for At-Home Algae Farming

Rhode Island School of Design industrial design grad student Hyunseok An created The Coral as part of a vision for the future of living that proposes home algae farming as a sustainable food source. The modular micro-algae system is wall-mounted and offers a decorative installation as well as one that promises to nourish the members of a household—as algae is rich in vitamins and minerals. Moreover, the structure will be able to counter air pollution "with [a] 10 times greater CO2 fixation than terrestrial plants."
Each one of the modular squares that is part of the wall system is capable of holding roughly two grams of algae and the intuitive design makes it easy to know when the algae is ready to be harvested, as it will go from a light green to a dark green color.
