Nifemi Marcus-Bellow Explores Exploitation with Whispers of a Trail
Amy Duong — March 4, 2025 — Art & Design
Designer Nifemi Marcus-Bello is the creative mind behind Whispers of a Trail, which is a collectible furniture range. He explores the difficulties that come with working with copper materials in Nigeria -- it is mined by rarely sold. The capsule marks the third instalment in his Oríkì series, where he explores three materials: bronze, followed by aluminum, and now copper.
Marcus-Bello speaks to Dezeen about the design and inspiration, noting, "Growing up in Nigeria, you hear about the oil and gas industry, where oil is extracted but never refined in Nigeria. It's refined abroad somewhere in America or Europe and then sold back to us. So petrol in itself is extremely expensive. I wanted to find a material that was prominent in Lagos or a city that I know well and understand why it is being extracted, refined abroad, and then we're rarely using them or not able to use the raw material."
