The peculiar stage between life and death is explored in the Viral Series by Jess Riva Cooper, an artist based in Toronto, Canada. The sculpture collection is made up of ceramic busts that appear to have been overgrown with all sorts of exotic vegetation. Whether that is in the form of textured porcelain plants or painted ones, the effect is beautifully haunting.
Created as part of an artist residency last fall at The Kohler Factory in Sheboygan, Wisconsin, Viral Series by Jess Riva Cooper is a combination of color, drawing and clay work that specifically recalls urban areas that have been reclaimed by nature, such as Detroit, Michigan. Cooper writes, "Wild floral growth subverts past states, creating the preternatural from this transformation."
