The Toy Like Me Campaign Spurs The Makies to Create More Diverse Dolls
Meghan Young — May 15, 2015 — Life-Stages
Toy Like Me is a viral Facebook campaign started by two deaf mothers who were looking to diversify the toy industry in more meaningful ways. The hashtag was brandished proudly by supporters and culminated in a new line by The Makies. The company decided to create three dolls with disabilities in an attempt to be more inclusive of all children in the world. 3D Print writes, "There is a validation of self that exists as a foundational part of The Makies dolls that made them the perfect place to start."
The Toy Like Me line includes hearing aids and predominant birthmarks. Matthew Wiggins, CTO of MakieLab, says, "It’s fantastic that our supercharged design and manufacturing process means we can respond to a need that’s not met by traditional toy companies."
