Carlo Ratti and Italo Rota designed The Greenery, a farmhouse renovation, and extension of an Italian home. The renovation includes an atrium space that encapsulates a 10-meter-tall ficus tree in the center of the living space. Located in the countryside outside Parma, the Italian home blurs the boundaries between nature and artificiality.
The large ficus tree is installed in the home's open-plan living space and kitchen. Moreover, the tree is covered by a weathered stell-topped extension attached to the site's original farmhouse. Inside, the living space features a weathered steel staircase, creating cohesion between the inside and outside of the building. Perforated brick walls cover the windows on either side of this room to create a pattern of light and shadow.
