American artist Doug Aitken has been known for his perception-focused installations that utilize mirrors and visual cues, however, Sonic Mountain is different. Composed out of 365 wind chimes, the installation sits amid the "eucalyptus grove of the 200-acre Sonoma County property" and its environment is crucial for the performance of the piece.
The skeleton of Sonic Mountain is rounded and the wind chimes are arranged strategically by length. Needless to say, when the wind blows, the installation is affected, making sounds that disperse throughout the space. In addition, light and other natural elements also contribute to the Sonic Mountain experience through reflection, colors, and patterns. Visitors, however, are encouraged not to touch.
