Researchers have Augmented Cement with Shrimp Cells for Strength

Researchers at Washington State University and the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory have teamed up to create a new shrimp cell-fused cement product. The researchers have added nanoparticles extracted from shrimp cells to cement mixes in order to drastically increase the strength of the cement. According to the team of researchers, the resulting shrimp shell-cement composite is a mixture of two pastes that creates a material that is substantially stronger than regular cement, as much as 40% stronger and 12% more resilient to compression.

This was not created by virtue of cement being not strong enough for tasks, but rather, was created for environmental reasons. The increased strength of the shrimp cement composite results in less cement being required for architectural tasks, meaning less cement is produced, fewer emissions are produced, and there is a positive impact on the environment, comparatively.
