Ceramic Installation Vessels

Jihyun Kim’s Salty Fairy Ring Uses Slip-Cast Form for Immersive Array

The Salty Fairy Ring series by ceramic artist Jihyun Kim comprises an arrangement of slip-cast salt vessels displayed in a circular formation, using porcelain and high-fired color stain with her distinctive gloop glaze. The installation’s cluster of vivid, fungus-evoking forms is derived from motifs in Korean folklore and European fairy-ring mythology, where circular patterns of mushroom growth carry cultural narratives about magic and protection. The vessels’ organic profiles and saturated surfaces appear to defy gravity, drawing attention to natural shapes reinterpreted through ceramic techniques.

Kim, a South Korean artist based in London, explores themes of shelter, ritual and belonging through ceramics, linking traditional beliefs in salt as a protective substance with storytelling embedded in form and surface treatment. The Salty Fairy Ring installation was featured at Collect Open 2026 at Somerset House as part of a broader craft and design exhibition
