Barcode Iconography

This Recent Scott Blake Work is Meticulous and Intricate

From Elvis to Marlyn Monroe to Bruce Lee, there is something for everyone in this recent Scott Blake art. What makes this work really inventive however, is that the artist has rendered each of his subjects using only barcodes. To say this required meticulous work is an understatement.

Beyond actually making the portraits, finding that many barcodes is a feat in of itself. To then take each of these countless, diminutive pieces of paper and arrange them so that they faithfully portray familiar pop culture icons is simply impressive.

Pop culture-inspired art can often reach large audiences due to the familiarity most people have with pop culture. However, this is a double-edged sword. Because people are so familiar with figures like Bruce Lee, they are better equipped to criticize likenesses of him. Most people would be hard-pressed to nitpick at these barcode portraits though.
