The Pocket Patrol app is a result of the tech minds at Samsung collaborating with the safety savants at Surf Life Saving Australia, the country's organization for beach lifesaving. As a nation with thousands of miles of warm coastline, Australia is a haven for beach bums. However, the ocean is dangerous, claiming dozens of unsuspecting swimmers' lives annually, and the Pocket Patrol app uses AI to try and reduce those numbers.
With Pocket Patrol, swimmers can use their smartphone cameras to scan the waterline before taking a swim. The app uses augmented reality to place markers over top of the images that the camera takes in, flagging potentially dangerous areas for things like rip tides, stingers, shoals and more.
The app's main goal, even above saving lives in the moment, is to teach beach-goers to identify these danger signs for themselves.
