Design firm OPA has designed the Plumbago restaurant nestled in the Cuauhtémoc neighborhood. It is made with inspiration drawn from the likeness of a garden shed. The space is clad in corrugated panels made from polycarbonate materials. It takes over two gabled volumes on a compact site between two taller surrounding buildings. The main building has clear siding to create a bright and airy feel. The space seats 70 people across the dining area and bar, serving up a Mediterranean menu.
OPA co-founders Rosalía Yuste and Diego Mañón explain the design project and how it evoked a sense of tranquility whilst remaining inviting and practical. “We wanted to create an urban greenhouse – a peaceful space filled with light and vegetation nestled in the concrete jungle of Mexico City." They add, “We wanted to maximise natural light and visual transparency between the street and the interior terrace, encouraging the curiosity of the passersby. The result is a room inundated with light, creating a harmonious and unique atmosphere.”
