The Pancakes Against Breast Cancer campaign was born out of the misconception that a mammogram "squashes the breast like a pancake," and turned pancakes into a point of conversation, a symbol of life and a catalyst for action.
The campaign by the American Cancer Society of Puerto Rico was created by the Puerto Rican advertising agency Lopito, Ileana & Howie, broke fundraising records by sharing original, chef-created recipes inspired by real survivor stories. On social media, the campaign went further with the My Recipe, My Story initiative featuring people sharing their own pancake recipes and talking about the importance of getting a mammogram.
Alongside an interactive digital platform featuring educational content, recipes and prevention resources, the campaign also included Pancake Talks in restaurants, communities and other venues featuring chefs, doctors, and survivors who shared stories and promoted early detection
