These Justin Volz illustrations may be eclectic in concept and rendering techniques, but they always have an underlying creepiness to them that’s distinct to the New York-based artist. He’s a master of generating mood in his compositions, using muted colors frequently to flesh out bizarre scenes. The proportions of his subjects, often lanky or subtly abnormal, also serve to unnerve viewers, but Volz is so skilled at his craft that he doesn’t have to overtly depict freakish things to make audiences feel uneasy. If these aren’t signs of talent personified, then I don’t know what is.
Justin Volz currently works as a freelancer specializing in, as specified on his personal website, “editorial illustration, hand drawn type, narrative, character design, book, apparel and gallery work.”
