The upcoming Ataribox system has finally been given some concrete details and has been rechristened as the Atari VCS. The system's new name and final design will be shown off at GDC 2018 and will also feature prototypes of the classic-style joystick and more modern controller. Similar to Nintendo’s NES Classic and SNES Classic consoles, the Atari VCS will draw on design aesthetics inspired by its original Atari 2600 Video Computer System, but will be capabale of playing modern PC games. The system will run on a custom AMD processor, Radeon graphics and a Linux-based OS.
The Atari VCS has yet to receive a release date and was actually pushed back from its original pre-order date. The pause in release was done as the company needed more time “to create the platform and ecosystem the Atari community deserves.” Atari will be reopening pre-orders in April of 2018, but the ship date could be any time in the future.
