Haniyasu House by Aatismo Reconnects Living Spaces with Ceramic Craft

— March 10, 2026 — Art & Design
The Haniyasu House by Aatismo is a residential project in Kamakura, Japan designed as a shared home for ceramic artists and architects within the same family. The Haniyasu House by AATISMO transforms a 1967 wooden dwelling into a two-family residence organized around a large central living space where daily life and making coexist. Four new rooms extend from the corners of the structure, creating a layout that separates individual working and sleeping areas while maintaining a communal core for gathering and shared activities.

Material experimentation defines the architecture, with walls finished using layers of soil from the site, bisque-fired clay fragments, and plaster mixed with iron and copper powders that oxidize to produce varied colors. Each room uses different finishes derived from ceramic processes, resulting in interiors that resemble cave-like spaces shaped by earth and craft.

Trend Themes

  1. Material-first Residential Design — Blending structural renovation with site-derived earth finishes creates opportunities for housing that prioritizes tactile, locally sourced materials over standardized industrial surfaces.
  2. Craft-integrated Communal Living — Residences organized around shared making spaces illustrate a shift toward live-work typologies that embed production and collaboration into domestic life.
  3. Earth-based Aesthetic Finishes — The deliberate use of soils, bisque fragments, and metal-oxidized plasters signals demand for finish palettes that emphasize weathered, craft-driven patinas instead of uniform paint or gypsum.

Industry Implications

  1. Architecture and Construction — Design and build practices centered on adaptive reuse and material experimentation are positioned to redefine cost models and client expectations for residential retrofit projects.
  2. Ceramics and Materials Manufacturing — Producers of clay-based plasters, fired-clay fragments, and pigmenting metal powders may find growth in supplying bespoke, craft-oriented finish systems for interiors and facades.
  3. Sustainable Building Consultancy — Consultancies focused on low-embodied-carbon materials and closed-loop sourcing are increasingly relevant as projects seek locally harvested earths and artisanal waste revalorization strategies.
