Fast food chains are now making kids meals, but for grownups. Think nostalgic characters, collectible toys, and playful packaging. But why would a forty-five-year-old want a cartoon figurine in their meal?
Well, the answer is quite unique. For today's consumers, adulthood feels blurrier than ever, and it looks different than it used to. Traditional milestones like home ownership, stable careers, the linear settling-down arc, have shifted or disappeared entirely.
The definition of being grown up has become ambiguous, and so brands are selling things like permission to play, nostalgia that you can hold, and dopamine that fits right inside a paper box. The bigger signal that Trend Hunter's proprietary trend intelligence engine has detected is that nostalgia has become a reliable economic driver. With a score of seven out of 10, this trend is gaining momentum as consumers are reaching back to their childhood references, not out of recession, but rather out of cultural fatigue.
The grown-up world keeps asking for more of them, and so a meal that reminds them of being eight years old for 15 minutes is a small and welcome reset.
