Ground Control from Ninkasi Brewing is the world's first, and currently only, space beer. The Oregon-based craft brewery sent up a batch of yeast into space and that yeast was used to make Ground Control. The beer is an imperial stout and checks in at 10 percent ABV. As you'd expect, the beer is a limited edition as only six vials of yeast were sent into space.
The craft brewing scene is booming in the United States, but there are only so many ways for breweries to create unique beers. Creative naming is one tactic, as is upping the amount of alcohol. Ground Control from Ninkasi Brewing could very well start a shift in which breweries use novelty ingredients, such as space yeast, to get an edge over the competition.
