German Cave Homes

Five Carefully Preserved 19th-Century German Cave Homes Are Open to Visitors

In the Langenstein village, near Germany’s Harz Mountains, five of the 10 carefully preserved 19th-century German cave homes are open to visitors. Helmut Scholle, a member of the Langensteiner Höhlenwohnungen association, gives regular tours of the old homes to showcase the monumental human effort that went into their construction.

Upon entering the structure, it becomes obvious that the marks on the rugged walls are signs of repeated chipping and chiseling, indicating that these cave homes were manually carved into the rocks. Scholle reveals that was migrant farmers in desperate need of housing turned these rock faces into cozy homes, complete with chimneys and distinct rooms. A shortage of housing in the area led to the construction of these unique homes. On average, each carved-out cave home took one year to construct.
