DARPA Backs Research on Flying Snakes

The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency is funding research at Virginia Tech to find out how flying snakes manage to fly. There are five related species of Asian tree-dwelling snakes that are able to fling themselves from branches and fly though the air.

The very idea of flying snakes seems like weaponry from the bowels of the earth to me, but apparently, DARPA is interested in the aerodynamic properties of how snakes fly.
