McDonald’s is currently using iBeacons to facilitate mobile payments at its drive-thru windows. While many chains have apps that allow customers to pay for their order with their smartphone, the technology is largely limited to the in-store experience. Now restaurants are using mobile payments at the drive-thru as well.
In order to make paying at the drive-thru easier, McDonald’s teamed up with a company called Piper to design an app that would facilitate mobile payments. When combined with beacon technology, the app is able to send push-notifications to nearby customers. When the consumer reaches the drive-thru window they can pull up the mobile wallet to pay or redeem different coupons.
The technology ultimately helps to speed up the drive-thru process by eliminating the cumbersome exchange of cash.
