Collectible cards and sports go hand-in-hand and thanks to Epics.gg, eSports trading cards will soon be up for collection. Raising $2 million in a seed round, Epics.gg is set to launch its first run of digital collectors cards. Being dubbed the Epics cards, these collector pieces will be completely digital and will feature rich media like GIFs, stats, in-game items and digital signatures. Going beyond trading cards, Epics.gg hopes to create an integrated marketplace and trading system in which users can buy, sell and construct their own collections.
Epics.gg's move to create eSports trading cards fits particularly well with the company, as the website already deals in certified digital memorabilia. The ultimate goal of this project will be to intersect the growing eSports market with the massive sports collectible market. It seems as though collectible memorabilia may be the exact thing eSports leagues need to legitimizing the sport. Much like baseball cards, Epics.gg is hoping to create a separate collector culture within eSports and will hopefully build a distinct marketplace for this culture.
