BAE Systems may be best known for coming up with cutting-edge and futuristic military, defense and aerospace solutions, but the company has taken all its expertise and applied it to the world of competitive cycling by developing an advanced ergometer.
Developed in collaboration with UK Sport, BAE Systems' ergometer will be used by Britain's top cyclists leading up to the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.
This ergometer is capable of measuring cyclists' power output. Despite looking like a regular ergometer, this particular contraption features a massive variable flywheel that can be manipulated to change the degree of resistance on the pedals, mimic gear ratios with great precision and generate assistive forces for the cyclist.
Ultimately, this high-tech tool will give Britain's elite cyclists a competitive advantage going into the Olympics and beyond.
