Oshen C-Star is an autonomous ocean robot developed by UK-based robotics company Oshen that became the first uncrewed surface vehicle to collect environmental data throughout a Category 5 hurricane. The robot is part of a fleet of C-Stars deployed near the U.S. Virgin Islands ahead of Hurricane Humberto, of which three units survived the storm’s extreme conditions while continuously recording and transmitting temperature, pressure, and other measurements.
The C-Stars are autonomous micro-robots designed to operate at sea for extended periods and collect oceanic and meteorological data. The project was led by Oshen founder Anahita Laverack, who shifted from aerospace ambitions to marine robotics with a goal of addressing gaps in ocean observation.
The robots are constructed to withstand high winds, rough seas, and prolonged exposure to storm conditions, enabling researchers to obtain real-time readings from within powerful storms that were previously inaccessible to conventional instruments. Data collected by the C-Stars supports weather forecasting and climate research by filling observational blind spots in ocean environments, particularly during extreme weather events.
