The first Volvo commercial self-driving trucks will soon be used at the Norwegian Brønnøy Kalk mine to transport limestone along five kilometers of roads and tunnels. This is the first commercial deal Volvo has made for its autonomous vehicles and this deal helps further normalize the use of these vehicles on public roads. According to Volvo Trucks’ director of autonomous solutions, Sasko Cuklev, "it is exciting to reach this point where we introduce autonomous solutions.”
The use of commercial self-driving trucks will also give Volvo a chance to further test its autonomous vehicle technology. Cuklev also stated, "by working in a confined area on a predetermined route, we can find out how to get the best out of the solution and tailor it according to specific customer needs." It is important to note that Volvo will not be selling commercial self-driving trucks. Instead, they will be offering a transport service that utilizes these vehicles.
