Autonomous Heavy-Duty Trucks

SANY Group and Pony.ai Announce Mass-Production Readiness

The joint venture between industrial manufacturer SANY Group and autonomous driving technology firm Pony.ai has declared that its collaboratively engineered fourth-generation autonomous heavy-duty truck has progressed to a stage prepared for volume manufacturing, with initial units scheduled for commercial deployment in the coming year. This venture is famed as a pivotal step within a broader strategic push towards digitized and decarbonized logistics

The autonomous heavy-duty truck is an electric model featuring a substantial battery capacity and a drivetrain engineered with redundant safety systems across multiple critical functions. The vehicle has undergone various environmental and electromagnetic compatibility tests.

SANY Group and Pony.ai also highlighted a possible operational concept that involves a platooning configuration where a single human-driven truck leads several autonomous followers. Internal pilot studies project that this system will significantly lower per-unit distance freight expenses and raise profitability.
