Coilo is a rollable umbrella holder created by designer Aishwarya Ajith as a piece of “situational furniture” that only takes form when needed. The base mat is made from flexible, water-resistant EVA foam that can be rolled into a cylinder to hold wet umbrellas at an entryway. A simple joint system provides structure, while supporting flaps that button together in a patterned closure to stabilize the form and accommodate umbrellas of different heights.
The holder uses a terracotta clay base plate that absorbs moisture and reduces pooling on floors. When umbrellas are removed, the structure unbuttons and returns to a flat mat profile for storage. The concept was developed from observations of compact living, including Indian hostels and shared dormitories during the monsoon season, where floor mats are commonly used for group gatherings.
