The Brown House Uses Ecological Materials to Redefine Urban Infill

— August 6, 2025 — Art & Design
The Brown House by BLDUS revitalizes a narrow Capitol Hill alley site in Washington, D.C. through an artful fusion of sustainable materials and passive design. Positioned on Overbeck Alley, this 1,600 ft² single-family infill reflects newly relaxed zoning laws that allow for residential alley housing. Instead of conventional drywall and vinyl, the architects wrapped the structure in cork and black locust wood slats. Bamboo panels, cork-sprayed interiors, and natural finishes reflect a “farm-to-shelter” ethos focused on health and ecological stewardship.

Inside, clerestory windows and skylights guide daylight into communal areas. A central switchback stair links the first-floor bedroom to the living areas above and a rooftop garden. The home incorporates living systems like rain-fed rooftop planters, hemp insulation, and wooden screens to minimize energy use while supporting urban biodiversity. The result is a materially rich, socially engaged urban infill that redefines what alley dwellings can offer modern cities.
