Alder House is a transformed postmodern residence in Seattle’s Denny Blaine neighborhood that now emphasizes a serene connection with its wooded surroundings and contemporary spatial flow. The renovation, led by SHED Architecture & Design, retains elements of the original 1990s structure while enhancing cohesion between indoors and landscape through strategic layout changes.
The three-story home now features an angled forest path leading to an elevated deck, generous glazing that draws filtered light and views inside, and a repositioned kitchen at the heart of daily life that opens into adjacent living areas. Interior updates introduce custom ash built-ins for continuity and storage, refined circulation patterns, and large sliding and folding doors that dissolve boundaries between interior rooms and the forest deck. The primary suite was reoriented to capture tree canopy views, and Passive House performance strategies were incorporated to improve comfort and reduce energy use without sacrificing design intent.
