Salvaged Materials House

Iris Residence by Tres Birds Uses Reclaimed Materials & Low-Energy Design

The Iris Residence is a low-energy home in Colorado designed by architecture studio Tres Birds using salvaged materials sourced from buildings across the region. The house was developed with an emphasis on resource reuse and environmental performance, incorporating reclaimed wood, brick, and other materials recovered from demolition projects. The design aims to reduce construction waste while creating a layered material palette that reflects the history of the reused components.

The residence also integrates energy-efficient strategies to lower operational demand. High-performance insulation, efficient glazing, and passive solar considerations help regulate interior temperatures and reduce energy consumption. The project forms part of Tres Birds’ broader design approach focused on sustainable architecture that blends recycled materials with contemporary residential forms.

Salvaged-materials Architecture
The growing use of reclaimed wood, brick, and fixtures creates room for product systems that formalize heterogeneous salvaged components into consistent, design-ready assemblies.
Low-energy Residential Design
Integration of high-performance insulation, efficient glazing, and passive solar strategies is enabling homes to approach net-zero energy profiles while redefining performance benchmarks.
Circular Supply Chains for Construction
Networks that reclaim, sort, and redistribute building materials introduce new value flows that alter material lifecycles and waste economics.

Sectors Adopting This

Residential Architecture
Design practices that combine reclaimed materials with contemporary forms are reshaping client expectations and professional project workflows.
Building Materials Manufacturing
Manufacturers adapting to variable reclaimed inputs could develop modular, compatible product lines that bridge salvaged and new material markets.
Demolition & Deconstruction Services
Specialized deconstruction operations are converting demolition waste into traceable material streams that impact downstream pricing and supply reliability.
