At first glance it's hard to tell what makes the new Porsche braided carbon fiber wheels cost almost $18,000. These are some of the most expensive, if not the most expensive, optional wheels an automaker has ever offered. What makes them so pricey is their creation process. Over 200 individual components make up each wheel, and the machines needed to make each one are massive.
These braided carbon fiber wheels aren't just labors of love that allow drivers to show off. They're designed to increase performance, with Porsche saying they're 20 percent lighter and 20 percent stronger than standard alloy wheels. The wheels will only be available on the Porsche 911 Turbo S Exclusive, a car with a sticker price of $292,000. While $18,000 is a lot for a set of wheels don't be shocked if other automakers begin offering similar wheels for their priciest cars.
