Censorship-Fighting Billboards

Billboards Beyond Boarders Gives a Voice to Silenced Journalists

Billboards Beyond Borders is a new campaign that's giving a voice to the journalists who have been silenced due to government censorship.

This initiative was launched in response to the 65 journalists who were killed and 326 who were put in prison in 2017 alone. Using Google Maps, this clever project digitally altered billboards to feature the messages of persecuted journalists. Some of the published quotes call out president's behavior, while others address government corruption. The digital alteration of these public billboards abide by Google's guidelines and share important messages in a way that's difficult for governments to intervene.

The billboards can be found online in countries including Turkey, India, the United States and more.
