Revitalized European Houses

Didea Participates in the '1 Euro House' Initiative

The architectural firm Didea has participated in the local '1 Euro House' initiative, which aims to revitalize depopulated historic centers. As part of this venture, the studio completed a renovation project in the Sicilian village of Sambuca di Sicilia.

Didea transformed a dilapidated early 20th-century structure, which was partially integrated into the ancient town walls, into a modern dwelling. The design approach prioritized contextual sensitivity and utilized a restrained material palette of natural, breathable substances, alongside custom-designed elements. Some key highlights included freestanding perforated staircases in vivid colors that reference the surrounding landscape.

Didea's methodology for the '1 Euro House' initiative emphasized collaboration with local artisans and avoided technologically intensive solutions in favor of traditional restoration techniques. Nicola Andò, CEO and Creative Director of Didea, shared about the project: "In Sambuca, we had the opportunity to breathe new life into a piece of vernacular architecture, an authentic expression of the place that risked being forgotten, allowing it to continue telling its story through the experience of dwelling."
