The Gentleman is a Renovated Art Deco Apartment in Sydney

The Gentleman was redesigned by YSG as a full renovation of a 95-square-metre apartment within a 1929 art deco building in Sydney's Redfern suburb. The project restored original architectural details while introducing contemporary interventions shaped by the clients' lifestyle and the building's heritage.

Taller entryways were created by reinstating the original architraves at a higher level, while chamfered surfaces, stepped cornices, geometric detailing, and a sculptural timber banquette reinterpret art deco forms throughout the interior. The layout retains the apartment's linear organization, linking living spaces with views toward the Sydney Opera House.

The renovation combines American oak, Australian red cedar, stainless steel, Lauriana quartzite, and amber glass to create a warm material palette. Ochre walls, chocolate-toned finishes, and amber lighting complement the restored architectural features, while the kitchen pairs stainless steel surfaces with a monolithic quartzite hood and splashback.
