X5's Self-Checkouts Lets Customers Pay with Face Recognition

Russian food retail group X5’s Perekrestok supermarkets are now allowing customers to pay for their purchases at X5 self-checkouts with 3D face recognition technology. Created as a contactless solution to help shoppers Pay with a Glance, Sberbank customers can now register for and link a payment card via the Sberbank Online mobile app.

A smartphone or a bank card are usually required for checking out of a store but neither is needed thanks to this biometric payment solution. With a 3D camera, the solution boasts a high degree of security, accuracy and depth detection.

According to X5, "It takes only a few seconds to pay with a glance, and the service is comparable to a regular bank card transaction in terms of speed."
