The Wo Hop Upstairs expansion by Spaced Agency brings new architectural energy to Chinatown by growing vertically while respecting its dense context. The project wraps additional levels above the iconic restaurant, inserting contemporary form above historic urban grain. The expansion steps back at upper floors to reduce visual weight and maintain street-level character. By stacking spaces upward instead of outward, the design activates what was previously unused air.
The interior rethinks circulation, linking the old restaurant with new dining, performance, and lounge areas through light-filled ramps and openings. Materiality blends old and new: exposed structural elements, glass, and brick reconverge to connect heritage and reinvention. In its addition, the building becomes a bridge between eras—preserving identity even as it gains new life in Manhattan’s vertical tapestry.
