Clinton Hill Duplex Blends Shanghai Craft with Brooklyn Architecture

The Clinton Hill Duplex renovation by Bespoke Only reworks a 19th-century brownstone with carved timber doors, lattice panels and joinery details inspired by historic Shanghai interiors. The layout keeps the original staircase and structural walls while introducing new partitions that use patterned woodwork to allow light to pass between rooms. Carved doors with glass inserts act as dividers that maintain privacy and create shifting shadows across the interior as natural light changes through the day. Materials remain warm and tactile, pairing wood surfaces with neutral plaster finishes.

The kitchen is moved to the centre of the home to function as a social space that links the two levels. The upper floor is reconfigured into a primary suite with integrated dressing and bathing areas. Furniture combines vintage pieces with contemporary forms to support the layered aesthetic. The project balances cultural references with the existing architecture, creating an interior defined by craftsmanship and careful detailing.
