Northern Economy-Supporting Funding Initiatives

Canada Invests in Transportation in the North

The Canadian federal government has announced a significant investment of over $45 million to transportation in the North and economic opportunities in northern Manitoba. This funding will support the maintenance and operation of the Hudson Bay Railway, which will ensure affordable and reliable rail service for remote communities while also fostering Indigenous economic reconciliation.

The key projects and communities as part of this funding round include the Sagkeeng First Nation, the Marcel Colomb First Nation, the Norway House Cree Nation, and the University College of the North.

Additionally, more than $2.3 million has been allocated to workforce training and skill development programs in the critical minerals sector, with the hopes of empowering Indigenous communities with new employment opportunities. These initiatives aim to strengthen trade infrastructure, facilitate the export of Prairie resources, and position Manitoba as a key player in the global clean energy economy.
