Greater Manchester is making significant strides in improving rail station accessibility, with plans to upgrade 10 stations over the next three years. This is double the number completed in the previous decade. Funded through the City Region Sustainable Transport Settlement and the Department for Transport’s Access for All scheme, these upgrades aim to increase the proportion of accessible stations in the region from 43% to 63% by 2028. Key projects in the rail station accessibility initiative include installing lifts and step-free access at stations such as Levenshulme, Davenport, and Moorside. Several of these projects are expected to be completed by 2027.
Greater Manchester's efforts are part of the broader Bee Network initiative, which integrates rail, bus, tram, and active travel to create a more inclusive and efficient public transport system.
