Tony Sandoval doesn't hold back when he paints. Sure, many people have explored the idea of depicting innocent girls as scary supernatural beings, but I've yet to see another artist render that concept with the subject gushing blood from her mouth in such copious amounts and to such unnerving effect. To then have someone’s hands examining that mouth and uncovering vampire-like fangs, that just takes gruesome to deliciously enjoyable realms.
Aside from his bleak palette and morbid concepts, Tony Sandoval’s art also stands out in that he has a penchant for painting females with large craniums. Their torsos and ligaments contrast greatly by being stick skinny, to the point where they couldn’t possibly support their heads in the real world. But it’s the fantasy of it all that makes Sandoval’s work such a pleasure to look at.
