Courtyard Brick Houses

The Threshold House by Madras Spaces Uses Simple Rural Materials

The Threshold House is a rural home in Tamil Nadu, India designed by architecture studio Madras Spaces using a restrained palette of locally available materials. The 1,000-square-foot house was conceived as a quiet retreat that reconnects daily living with agricultural surroundings. Built primarily from brick, lime plaster, timber, and clay tiles, the structure follows a minimal construction approach focused on “only what was necessary.” The layout centers on a series of thresholds that gradually transition between indoor rooms and the surrounding landscape.

The architecture emphasizes passive climate strategies suited to the region’s hot conditions. Thick brick walls, shaded verandas, and tiled roofs help regulate interior temperatures while allowing natural airflow through the house. Spaces are arranged around semi-open corridors and courtyards that frame views of nearby farmland and vegetation.
