Playable Court Murals

The Geometry of Play is a Colorful Playable Art Installation

Geometry of Play is a public art installation by Sharmistha Ray that transforms three pickleball courts at Arts Landing in downtown Pittsburgh into large-scale geometric murals. Commissioned by the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust, the project marks the country's first artist-designed pickleball courts and features interlocking circles, triangles, and grids inspired by South Asian visual traditions and geometric abstraction. Designed to be both artwork and playable surface, the installation evolves as players move across the courts, integrating recreation with public art.

Installed as part of Arts Landing's inaugural public art program, the courts debuted during Pittsburgh's Picklesburgh festival and remain open for everyday community use. The commission joins a broader collection of public artworks created for the civic space, reflecting Ray's multidisciplinary practice exploring identity, belonging, and shared experiences through abstraction.
