As part of Microsoft's Envision conference in New Orleans, Coop Italia showed off its concept supermarket of the future.
It's envisioned that the entire store would be able to operate on technology available from Microsoft, including Microsoft Azure for cloud data storage and management and cash registers equipped with Intel-based Microsoft software.
In this store of the future, Coop Italia sees that Microsoft’s Kinect motion detectors would be able to pick up on a shopper's location and use interactive displays to highlight certain products. These digital screens would also be able to share information that would be of concern to some shoppers, like allergens, as well as be able to suggest wine pairings. Although this supermarket of the future sounds high-tech, it promises a more natural shopping experience to consumers.
