Endurance Energy is advancing subsea geothermal power through a demonstration that generated electricity directly from an active underwater volcano. Its Adélie test system converted geothermal heat into usable energy while operating nearly a mile beneath the Pacific Ocean. The deployment combined seafloor drilling, underwater power generation, and remote operation, demonstrating capabilities previously untested together in this environment.
During a three-week deployment near Oregon, the company completed a 52-foot geothermal well and operated its underwater plant from Seattle using fiber-optic communications. Connected to a natural hydrothermal vent, the system produced net-positive electricity for 8.7 seconds, reaching a peak output of 16.5 kilowatts.
Although sustained generation remains unproven, the results could support future commercial development. Endurance is developing a two-megawatt generator and targeting electricity production in Tonga in 2027, potentially offering coastal communities an alternative to imported diesel.

Key Themes Behind This Trend
- Subsea Geothermal Generation
- Underwater volcanic heat sources present a new pathway for clean baseload electricity in coastal and island regions with limited land-based energy options.
- Remote Ocean Infrastructure
- Fiber-optic operation of deep-sea energy systems expands the potential for managing complex industrial assets in hazardous marine environments from distant control centers.
- Diesel Replacement Power
- Small-scale geothermal plants near coastal communities could reduce reliance on imported fuels by supplying localized renewable electricity with lower logistical exposure.
Where This Applies
- Renewable Energy
- Marine geothermal resources add an unconventional generation category that could broaden clean energy portfolios beyond solar, wind, and land-based geothermal.
- Offshore Engineering
- Seafloor drilling and underwater power conversion create demand for specialized subsea equipment, installation methods, and maintenance models.
- Island Utilities
- Remote grids in island nations may benefit from ocean-based baseload power that aligns with energy security, fuel cost reduction, and decarbonization priorities.
